There are 41 different species, varieties, and hybrids of Oak trees in Arkansas according to the Arkansas Forestry Commission.  Wow.  I have several books describing trees but have not learned all the oaks. Spalted and burls are not a viriety but rather a form the wood takes during growth (burl) or in the stages of decomposition (spalt).  Oak is an open grain wood that turns failry well but seems to warp more excessive than others.
